Exfoliation can be performed me- chanically by scrubbing away the dead cells, or chemically by lifting and dis- solving the dead cells. But did you know these cells should first be addressed prior to the application of any exfoliat- ing agent for clients with darker skin? e cells of people with darker skin tones produce more pigment, contain more collagen, and are prone to conditions caused by pigmentation. In other words, instead of treating the pigmentation, the treatment does the opposite and causes more hyperpigmentation. erefore, it is important that those with darker skin follow their esthetician's suggestions to prepare their skin with proper home care products in the weeks leading up to the professional exfoliation treatment.
